About the Floating Studio

‘I love my studio. It makes me feel I am inside a ship with its bridge, its stores, its hold.’ - Pablo Picasso (Brassaï, ‘Conversations with Picasso’)

What has been the historical meaning of the artist’s studio? What does it represent nowadays? How has the essence and meaning of the studio changed within time? Those and other themes, such as: how to make art and artistic work more visible in the urban space context? how to create new kinds of cultural spaces, directed towards the people of the city? are explored by sculptor and professor Villu Jaanisoo in his new, Kalasatama area related project. In collaboration with Huttunen Lipasti Pakkanen Architects and Marinetek, Jaanisoo has planned the floating studio, which can also function as a gallery.

Throughout the history, besides working at the studio, artists have used the workspace also to present their creation: the studio has functioned as a place where the visitor gets to experience the working process, the artworks in their creation context, and the unique atmosphere of the space itself. The tradition of the open studios goes back at least to the time of Renaissance, when the apprentices were taught in artists’ workshops, and where the art patrons were invited. The tradition developed further to the well-known artists’ studios (Cézanne’s, Rodin’s, Picasso’s and others), which became essential sites of artistic creation and exposition, as well as social meeting places of the creative community. The artist’s studio, the ‘active creative force’ in itself, was built as an art object, as the total work of art, and was also meant to offer a complete, unique experience for those who visited it.

The floating studio will function as the studio of two sculptors, Villu Jaanisoo and Berit Talpsepp-Jaanisoo. However, the purpose is to also get other artists and art related professionals involved within various projects that will be arranged there – different kinds of art events, exhibitions, concerts, etc. This allows cooperation with art institutions from Helsinki and elsewhere. As a result, the floating studio will resist new challenges on several levels, at the same time preserving the long tradition of the artist’s atelier, bringing into this legacy novel additions also on international terms. It would present the working space of the artists as an exciting place, which is in itself much more than private space where the artists keep their artistic work hidden from the public. One of the purposes of the floating studio project is to dissolve the constrictive joints between studio, gallery and museum, and to offer new alternatives in showing art.

Villu Jaanisoo's sketch of the Floating Studio, 2016

The floating studio is planned as a two-storied wandering multifunctional space. On the bottom floor, there will be a modifiable studio space, workshops as well as the kitchen and sanitary facilities. On the second floor, the exhibition and working spaces will be situated. The studio itself is designed in the way that it would be transformable into the exhibition space. Also the hallway, passing through the second floor, is planned to always function as an exhibition space. The rest of the top floor’s spaces as well as the bottom floor studio could be transformed into the exhibition spaces if necessary.
In its own way, the studio is the intersection between public and private spaces.

The studio’s planned homeport is the shore between Kalasatama neighbourhood and Mustikkamaa island. One of the purposes of the floating studio is to bring liveliness and open new potentials to the residential district of Kalasatama. However, owing to its portability, the studio could also be towed to other places in order to show art or organise events.

For the construction, ecologically sustainable materials and methods are used. Sun- and wind power will be the main energy production sources. The construction of the floating studio will be based upon six large sea containers. The interior is planned in the way that part of it could be left without heating during the winter. The rainwater will be harvested and taken into use. To maximize the utilization of natural light, large-scale windows are planned for one side of the building.
As a result, there will be the multi-functioning space that is light, spacious, resistant and innovative.

The floating studio will offer alternative perspectives in making, showing and viewing art on different levels. The execution of these kind of new ideas will not only become the valuable addition to the Finnish art scene and allow new kinds of experiences to art viewers, but it also questions and broadens the practice, mission and responsibilities of a contemporary artist.

SUOMEKSI / IN FINNISH:

Kalasataman kelluva ateljee / galleria
